“Play: to engage in activity for enjoyment and recreation rather than for a serious or practical purpose.”
If I were to say I play the banjo it would give a false impression. Play in this sense alludes to some kind of skill or musical ability; neither of which I have. I am not a musician and it would be a stretch to call the sounds I create music. However, I do have fun with the banjo. Maybe it would be more accurate to say I play with the banjo; plucking strings in succession in a way that is pleasing to me. It’s a kind play that comes naturally to children and is often discouraged, considered just messing around. I consciously try to get into this space - I don’t take it seriously, it is unstructured, there are no expectations, there is no way to fail It is a kind of uninhibited creativity.
This is the principle I attempt to apply to my art.
